Committees

AMCHAM Jamaica’s committees are critical to the success of AMCHAM Ja. in addressing:

  • Key strategies to support business opportunities and risk mitigation in Jamaica and in the International market for its members.
  • Identify and implement AMCHAM Ja’s immediate business priorities
  • Develop a marketing and communications strategy to “tell our story better” (internal/external stakeholders

The committees are:

Trade & Investment

The Trade & Invest Committee advises and assists the Chamber in negotiating and concluding trade agreements, local & international policies with governments and/ or international organizations. The committee also works with the Secretariat to determine annual trade missions for the Chamber.

The committee deals with trade policy matters within 3 main areas:

  • Issues related to the Caribbean Basin Initiative
  • Bilateral trade relations
  • Legislations within the trade policy area when it needs to be examined by AMCHAM

Areas of focus

  • To coordinate and monitor AMCHAM Jamaica representation on external committees that work with the US and Jamaican governments and other private sector organisations.
  • To solicit input from AMCHAM Jamaica member companies as feedback to local and regional trade negotiations.
  • To research, track and maintain current records of Jamaica’s trade agenda as it relates to the US.
  • To monitor the trade and investment environment with a view to providing advanced notice and support on issues that may affect the investment and business climate in Jamaica.
  • To plan, develop and participate in trade conferences, seminars, working groups and policy forums.

Vocational Education

The purpose of the Vocational Education Committee is to oversee and actively participate in the initiatives for vocational education to build talent for the workforce and highlight areas of priority and of relevance to the members of the chamber and the wider corporate landscape. The committee shall also act as the main hub for incubation services and knowledge/development transfer of the Chamber, its activities and members. The Committee members will work with the Board of Directors, the CEO and the AMCHAM Secretariat to identify avenues of education as well as offer input for continuous improvement to services offered by the association.

Areas of focus

  • Establish/facilitate initiatives for vocational education to build talent for the workforce (incl. large projects) and business start-ups
  • Establish a footprint on education – JET in 6 significant areas, increase from 54 to 400 schools
  • Highlight areas of priority in a global context of relevance to the members of the chamber and the wider corporate landscape
  • Act as the main hub for incubation services and knowledge/development transfer

Membership Services & Relations

To oversee and participate in the retention and addition of new members to the Chamber. The Committee members will work with the Board of Directors, the CEO and the AMCHAM Secretariat to identify new members for recruitment, as well as offer input for continuous improvement to services offered by the association. It may be called on to oversee exit interviews for members who have not renewed their membership. It shall also review membership categories and offer recommendations to the Board on membership fees and categories.

Areas of focus

  • To focus on ensuring sufficient engagement/networking and satisfaction among members as well as ensuring that the AMCHAM Jamaica brand is promoted to all stakeholders.
  • To improve and sustain the image of AMCHAM Jamaica as proactive, vibrant and relevant by continuing to attract the highest quality members.
  • To encourage existing members to participate in AMCHAM Jamaica activities.
  • To underscore the relevance and benefits of membership whilst providing tangible benefits to the member companies.
  • To be exemplary ambassadors for AMCHAM Jamaica.
  • To grow the membership base

Business Development & Revenue Generation

The purpose of the Business Development & Revenue Generating Committee is to oversee and actively participate in retention and addition of new members and/or services to the Chamber. The Committee members will work with the Board of Directors, the CEO and the AMCHAM Secretariat to identify new members for recruitment, as well as offer input for continuous improvement to services offered by the association. It may be called on to oversee exit interviews for members who have not renewed their membership. It shall also review membership and services categories and offer recommendations to the Board on membership and services fees and categories.

Areas of focus

  • Develop a list of Revenue generating initiatives & projects
  • Source partners to implement (e.g. SME on line tools)
  • Explore visa processing services (refer to Embassy)
  • Support the activities of the Trade & Investment, Membership & Events Committees

PR & Communications

The purpose of the PR & Communication Committee is to oversee and actively participate in the increased visibility and framing of the Chamber, its activities and members. The Committee members will work with the Board of Directors, the CEO and the AMCHAM Secretariat to identify avenues of visibility and promotion as well as offer input for continuous improvement to services offered by the association. It may be called on to oversee events for reviews, content management as well as crisis management in extreme circumstances.

Areas of focus

  • To focus on the visibility and an increase in satisfaction among members as well as ensuring that the AMCHAM Jamaica brand is promoted to all stakeholders.
  • Framing and narrative for advocacy
  • Bigger presence to support Vision

Events & Sponsorships

The purpose of the Events & Sponsorships Committee is to plan, develop and administer events for AMCHAM Jamaica within budgetary guidelines approved annually or as needed by the Finance Committee and the Board of Directors; and to provide advice to the CEO and Board of Directors on short term issues and long term planning related to these events. The committee will consider events that meet the needs of AMCHAM Jamaica with regard to a diversity of interests and positions on local and international issues.

Areas of focus

  • Create events calendar that supports Vision, creates a competitive advantage and meets financial targets
  • Works with the membership committee to support the identified needs of the Chmaber and its members through events - planning, sponsorships, profit generation
  • Increased visibility of the Chamber and member companies through the activities invested in.

Finance & Governance

The Finance & Governance Committee is responsible for recommending financial policies, goals, and budgets that support the mission, values, and strategic goals of AMCHAM Jamaica. The committee also reviews the Chamber’s financial performance against its goals and proposes major transactions and programs to the Board of Directors.

Areas of focus

  • To provide direction and leadership and proactively promote environmental, safety and health values for the sustainable future of our companies, communities and nation.
  • To scan the national environment and make recommendations for AMCHAM Jamaica’s public positioning on issues.
  • To conceptualize and execute one governance related event per year.
  • To assist AMCHAM Jamaica in identifying policy and procedural gaps in its internal governance.
  • To assist with the development of policies as the need arises.
  • To support AMCHAM Jamaica’s lobby efforts by giving input on proposed legislation and providing summaries of recent legislation and communicating their business implications to the wider AMCHAM Jamaica membership.
  • Review accounting function and resourcing
  • Assess compliance and correct any deficiencies
  • Establish performance improvement requirements and put plans in place to strengthen financial position
